"Working with Doug Mills was a real pleasure. We have dealt with many realtors in our lifetime and Doug was by far the best experience we've had. He was always available, responsive, very patient and he listened! He offered excellent guidance in navigating through uncertainties and he found us the perfect spot that met our specific needs. We highly recommend Doug Mills to anyone looking to buy or sell in the Halifax area."

"We've used Doug to purchase two homes and we were pleased each time. We didn't feel rushed when looking and he was always eager to see homes with us. Doug has never tried to sugar coat a home for us and points out the good and the bad. We really appreciated having a Realtor that had our best interest in mind. We would easily recommend Doug to any friends or family."

The South Shore is Something Different
There’s a reason people who live here tend to stay. The South Shore of Nova Scotia ~ from the granite shores of Peggy’s Cove through Chester, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and down to Liverpool ~ offers a quality of life that’s genuinely hard to find elsewhere. Space, water, community, and a coastline that doesn’t quit.
Whether you’re a local looking to make a move, someone relocating from elsewhere in the province, or arriving from across the country or the world, this is a market worth understanding properly before you act. That’s where I come in.
I’m Doug Mills, a REALTOR® with Royal LePage Atlantic based in Mahone Bay. I know this coastline thoroughly ~ the communities, the properties, what’s fairly priced, and what to watch out for. My job is to make sure you don’t just find a property on the South Shore. You find the right one.
Hands-On, Hassle-Off Services
The South Shore, Community by Community
The corridor from St. Margarets Bay to Liverpool stretches roughly 180 kilometres of Atlantic coastline. Each community has its own distinct character, price range, and pace of life. Whether you’re after a walkable village, a working harbour town, a sailing destination, or a private stretch of coastline with no neighbours in sight ~ it’s all here.
COMMUNITY 1
St. Margarets Bay and Hubbards
25–45 minutes to Halifax
The eastern gateway to the South Shore and one of the most popular areas for Halifax commuters who want coastal living without sacrificing city access. Hubbards has a genuine year-round community feel ~ a good restaurant scene, beautiful beach frontage, and a strong local identity. Properties here range from lake cottages and beach homes to serious oceanfront on the outer bay.
Price Range: $500K–$1.2M+ | Character: Semi-rural coastal, community-oriented, Halifax-commutableCOMMUNITY 2
Chester
Premier sailing and marina destination
Chester is widely considered the most desirable address on the South Shore. A beautifully preserved town with a deep-water harbour, world-class yacht club, excellent dining, a golf course, and a strong arts and culture scene. The Back Harbour and the outer islands are stunning. Waterfront properties here routinely command the highest prices on the corridor — and they move quickly
Price Range: $700K–$3M+ | Character: Upscale coastal village, sailing culture, established community.COMMUNITY 3
Mahone Bay
The iconic Three Churches town
One of the most photographed towns on the East Coast. The famous Three Churches reflected in the bay, a walkable main street of independent shops and cafés, a strong year-round population, and a bay dotted with over 300 islands. Mahone Bay has a warm, community-minded character that’s hard to manufacture. Waterfront is still more accessible here than in Chester, but that gap is closing.
Price Range: $450K–$1.5M+ | Character: Artisan village, strong community, growing marketCOMMUNITY 4
Lunenburg
UNESCO World Heritage Site
One of the most architecturally significant towns in North America. The colourful historic waterfront is iconic worldwide, and the town has a thriving arts scene, excellent food, and a harbour that draws sailors from around the globe. Home to the Bluenose II. Lunenburg attracts a mix of long-time locals, artists, and international buyers who appreciate its unique place in the world.
Price Range: $500K–$2M+ | Character: Historic, cultural, internationally recognizedCOMMUNITY 5
Bridgewater
The South Shore’s service hub
The commercial and services centre of the South Shore region. Bridgewater has the South Shore Regional Hospital, full retail, and the strongest rental market on the corridor driven by healthcare and trades workers. Lower price points than the coastal villages and solid practical amenities. A sensible base for families who want affordability and access to services.
Price Range: $300K–$700K | Character: Urban services, practical, strong rental demandCOMMUNITY 6
Liverpool and South Queens
Best value on the South Shore
The most undervalued stretch of the corridor. Ocean access, beautiful coastline including Carter’s Beach (one of the finest in Atlantic Canada), and prices still meaningfully below the provincial median. Liverpool itself has a working harbour character and a genuine small-town feel. This is where buyers who want the water without the premium are looking right now.
Price Range: $250K–$800K | Character: Emerging, affordable, beach-focused, authenticSome of the most extraordinary properties on the South Shore sit between the towns ~ on granite points and sheltered coves with open Atlantic views and no neighbours in sight. If privacy and direct coastal access matter more than walkability and village amenities, the stretches between the communities are worth a close look.
